NPR interview of Washington DC club members by Peter Breslow NEW

For the hockey diehards, just thought you'd find it fun that George Mason University in the Washington DC area has approved the 1 credit course: PHED 158- Underwater Hockey.  This couse will begin in Spring 2003.  Many thanks to all those that reponded a few months back to my request for information to help put the class together.  Special thanks go to Sean Avent for putting together a great syllabus and Carol Rose for providing supporting documentation.

US National Underwater Hockey Tournament           Gainesville, Florida

Announcing the 2002 US National Underwater hockey Tournament to be held in Gainesville, Florida! This tournament will be an USOA sponsored event and so USOA memberships need to be current.  Please let me know of your team’s intention to enter the tournament ASAP via e-mail.

The tournament dates are Friday May 17, Saturday May 18th, and Sunday May 19th. The banquet will be held on Sunday night following end of play.

As play will start early Friday am, the level 1 course will be Thursday nite -  I need to know anyone wanting to take it for credit or no credit. Thank  you!!! And see you there  Carol Rose

On Monday, May 20th, there will be either a canoe trip down the Ichetucknee River or a boat trip on the Gulf of Mexico near Crystal River (to be decided).  This is a spring fed river that is crystal clear.  The underwater visibility is typically 50 ft or more.  Also there are numerous local springs (Ginnie, Blue, etc.) that are great snorkeling locations and offer some of the best cave diving in the world.  The Atlantic Beaches & Jacksonville are 1.5 hours from Gainesville.  The Gulf of Mexico is 45 minutes away (Cedar Key, as in the Jimmy Buffett song).  Tampa and Orlando are 2 hours away.  There is an airport in Gainesville but it is usually much cheaper to fly into Jacksonville, Orlando, or Tampa.

Venue: The tournament will be held in the Dwight H. Hunter Municipal  Pool. The pool is flat, has a fast fiberglass bottom and is 7 ft. deep.  Two playing areas will be available.

Tournament participation cost per person is $500/team (excludes mandatory USOA membership).  The banquet cost on Sunday is $20 per person.  Individual players will be assigned a team from a list of extra players.  Payment of tournament fees and 2002 USOA membership sign up have to occur before start of play.  For the banquet, if there are any dietary  equirements, Please let me know.  Paid tournament registration fees are due no later than May 1st.

Specific questions regarding format and rules can be addressed to Kendall Banks (KendallCTV@aol.com). Chief refs: Carol Rose & Woody Lee

Accommodations:
A block of rooms has been reserved for the Underwater Hockey National Tournament at two hotels that are across the street from each other.
Holiday Inn – West $59.00/ night
Phone: 352-332-7500
Web site: www.hiwgainesville.com
E-Mail: info@hiwgainesville.com

Days Inn – Newberry Rd. $46.00/night
Phone: 352-332-3033

Floor space is extremely limited and is offered on a first-come-first serve basis.  There is also tent space available in the back yard and woods.  For other hotels check the web.  Anything near exit 75 or 76, off of I-75 will be fine.  There are plenty of hotels to choose from.

Directions to Pool From Jacksonville (North): Take 301 S from I-10.  Go through Starke and Waldo.  Please note that the section of road between I-10 and Gainesville is notorious as being one of the worst speed traps in the country!  If the speed limit is 35 mph don’t travel 36!  Take route 24 south (Waldo Road) to Gainesville.  Once in Gainesville, take a right on 8th Avenue (the numbers will go down).   Then take the first right onto NE 14th St.  The pool is approximately 500 yards on the LHS.

Directions to Pool From South: Take I-75 N to Exit 76 (Newberry Rd.)  Head East (right) towards Gainesville.  In approximately one mile, take a left onto 8th Ave.  Follow 8th Ave for 5-6 miles.  You’ll pass from the NW section of town into the NE section of town.  After Main St. the street names will have a NE on them.  Once you pass Main St., the street numbers will start to increase.  Take a left on NE 14th St.  The pool is approximately 500 yards on the LHS.  If you cross Waldo Rd. (route 24) while traveling on 8th Ave., you have gone too far.

Directions to (Chris & Amy’s): From the pool get back onto NE 14th St. and take a right onto 8th Ave going west.  Follow 8th Ave until it ends.  Take a right onto Newberry Rd.  Go under I-75 (exit 76) and continue west on Newberry Rd. Take a left on NW 91st Street.  Go about a mile and then turn right onto SW 1st place (into Fort Clark Forest).  Follow the road until the stop sign.  Then take a right and go to the end of the court. Our house is the brown house (second from the end on the RHS), 105 NW 99th Terrace.  Call 352-331-2740  (Cellular: 352-246-9505) if you get lost.

US Nationals players:

1. The deadline to register a team for the tournament is May 1st!  Checks received after May 1st will be assessed a $50 late fee.

For the banquet, if there are any dietary requirements, Please let me know.  Paid tournament registration fees are due no later than May 1st.

Send checks to:
Christopher Niezrecki
105 NW 99th Terrace
Gainesville, FL 32607

2. Individual players or groups of players also need to register by May 1st. The cost is $50 per player ($55 after May 1st).  Individual players will be combined to form teams.  Any team may request individual players to play on their team in order to complete their roster.  Ultimately the placement of the individual players will be determined by the organizing committee.

3. The block of hotel rooms reserved for you will soon expire.  Please make reservations at one of the two hotels that is recommended in the attachment ASAP!

4. I need to determine a head count for the banquet on Sunday May 19th. Please let me know if you are planning on attending ASAP.

5. I need to determine who is planning canoeing on the Monday after the tournament.  We recently free dived one of the springs at the location we are going to.  It's a 35 -50 ft spring fed cave that has multiple rooms. The water is crystal clear and the cavern is amazing.  One of our hockey players recently submerged in the cavern for over 3 minutes without SCUBA. You can also SCUBA dive this cavern if you wish.

6. Currently I have verbal confirmation from the following teams:

Hockeynet

How to get the latest news on Hockey Net
Hockey net is an automated email service provided by the Underwater Society of America.   Sean Avnet at San Francisco University is the administrator. If you subscribe to this mailing list you will receive a copy of all email messages anytime someone sends a message to the email address: mailto: underwater-hockey@topica.com

I know this may disgruntle some of you, but the hockeynet has once again been moved. The changeover is automatic and people already subscribed to hockeynet at the mailinglist.com address will not have to do anything but send future messages to the new topica.com address - details below. Although I tried to keep the list at the same address so that everyone would know where to find us. Unfortunately, our service provider is selling out to a free service (Topica.com) that will put a couple lines of text at the bottom of each message. Fortunately though, we are now able to take advantage of more options with the new service including:

- selecting a digest or non-digest version

- a choice of reading messages on the web rather than having them emailed

- a searchable archive of messages (although I have had trouble with this feature)

Please let me know if you have outstanding thoughts on this service or if you are having trouble with any of the features. And if you have posted instructions about how to subscribe or unsubscribe to the mailinglist.net address on a web page, please change it. I will be searching for the old instructions and emailing the webmaster of those pages separately as well to remind them.

The new address for posting messages is: underwater-hockey@topica.com

The new address for subscribing is: underwater-hockey-subscribe@topica.com

The new address for unsubscribing is: underwater-hockey-unsubscribe@topica.com

You may also subscribe, unsubscribe, set personal features, etc, at: http://www.topica.com/lists/underwater-hockey
