Rene L. Rojas
Rene
Rojas started diving as a teenager in Chile. The call from the Ocean was so strong for him
that he made diving his career and sport diving his life long commitment. He progressed very fast from the local to the
National and then to the World level in spearfishing
competition. After moving to the USA at the beginning of 1977, he kept himself
busy learning the English language and making a living, besides learning the California waters. After joining the dive club Los Angeles Fathomiers in 1982 he qualified to enter his first
Nationals in Kona Hawaii
and his first Pacific Coast Championship in Santa Cruz California.
He kept competing until the present day.
He is proud that he was able to represent Chile
originally and then the USA
in World Championship competition around the world. His last participations were as Captain of
the team USA in the Worlds
in Iquique, Chile and in the Panamericanos
in Lima.
Rene was sponsored by
OMER in 2002 and he had the chance to use their equipment for the first
time. Today he still proudly uses
exclusively Omer’s line of gear which he regards as the best.
Some of Rene’s best
diving memories are the dives he made around the world and also the friendships
he developed with older and younger divers all over. This year is not different with the added
responsibility of working with a young Team USA. The challenge is big but having such
enthusiastic and energetic group of divers makes you look forward to work
together
